A life of care and kindness

“BlueCare provides the care, the company, and the way of life that we would hope for, for our aged folk”

At 96 years young, Gwen Fancourt’s bright eyes sparkle with warmth and compassion as she reminisces about her remarkable life dedicated to caring for others.

A former nurse and current beloved volunteer at BlueCare, Gwen has chosen to create an enduring legacy by leaving a gift in her Will to support elderly Queenslanders for generations to come.

Gwen’s passion for helping people blazed bright from an early age. During World War II, she served as a nurse in the British army while her late husband, Ron, was an engineer in the British airforce.

Though the turbulent times kept them apart, their love story only grew stronger.

After the war, they married and started a family, eventually moving to Australia in 1985 where Ron worked as an aircraft engineer.

It was here that Gwen found her calling as a nurse at BlueCare, pouring her heart into supporting the elderly community.

Even after retiring from nursing over 30 years later, Gwen’s drive to serve never waned. She continues volunteering at BlueCare to this day, providing luxury nail care and pampering sessions for residents.

“I forget how old I am at times. Many of the people here are much younger than me. But they need help, so I’m very happy to help them,” Gwen says with a warm smile.

Sadly, Gwen’s beloved husband Ron passed away in December. He had been living with dementia, but Gwen’s nursing experience gave her remarkable wisdom in how to uplift Ron’s spirit and ensure he lived life to the fullest during his final years.

“With people with dementia, you have to really be one of them. We used to put music on and dance and sing and have fun,” she recalls with a contented sigh.

At the residence, Gwen surrounds herself and other residents with joy every day. She organises social activities, tends to blooming gardens, and grows fresh vegetables for the community.

Her nurturing presence is a constant reminder of the difference one person’s kindness can make. It’s this spirit of generosity that inspired Gwen’s decision to leave a gift to BlueCare in her Will.

“I’ve left a gift because they remember and care for elderly Queenslanders. Most of us have had responsible jobs and spent our lives helping others. When we come to BlueCare, maybe because of illness or dementia, we need help.”

Through her legacy gift, Gwen hopes to uplift and enrich the lives of seniors for years to come, just as she has done throughout her incredible life’s journey.

“BlueCare provides the care, the company, and the way of life that we would hope for, for our aged folk,” she says simply.

Gwen’s story is a testament to how one person can create ripples of compassion that last forever.

Thanks to caring donors like Gwen, BlueCare can continue being a beacon of innovation and outstanding care that empowers our elders to live their lives with dignity and joy.
