A gift that awakens the senses

“This gift has truly blossomed into something amazing for our community"

For those living with dementia, the world can feel increasingly isolating and disconnected.

But thanks to the generosity of Barbara Harper, BlueCare’s aged care residents now have a revitalised sensory garden that provides a multisensory experience to engage and delight.

Barbara’s gift was made in loving memory of her late husband Brian, who was cared for at BlueCare.

Sensory gardens are incredibly valuable therapeutic tools for individuals with dementia.

The different sights, sounds, smells, textures and tastes can stimulate memories and emotions, calm agitated behaviours, and provide meaningful engagement with the present moment.

Something as simple as running one’s hands across fragrant lavender plants or listening to wind chimes can be grounding and soothing.

Her vision was to create a tranquil outdoor space that would stimulate the senses through sight, sound, smell, touch and taste.

The garden’s vibrant raised beds allow residents to get up close to colourful flowers and textured plants.

“Seeing the residents explore the garden with such curiosity and joy was incredibly moving,” shared John Pear, BlueCare’s manager overseeing the project.

“You could see them becoming present in the moment as they discovered each new sensory experience.”

“This gift has truly blossomed into something amazing for our community,” John expressed. “The garden is a place of tranquillity, engagement and renewed connection with nature.

For BlueCare’s residents living with dementia, that connection can be life-changing. Thanks to Barbara’s heartfelt generosity, the therapeutic power of the senses has been unlocked to improve wellbeing.

Gifts like these remind us of the profound impact one person’s kindness and vision can have on so many lives.

It is the generosity of caring individuals that allows BlueCare to continuously enhance its services and programs for those in our care.
