Culture, celebrated

Across six Pinangba locations, communities came together to celebrate culture, story, language and connection. These moments were joyful, powerful, and deeply rooted in community.

Across six Pinangba sites — from Cooktown to Thursday Island — something remarkable unfolded over the past year. Twenty-one cultural celebrations. More than 650 participants. Elders sharing stories. Children learning dances. Traditional food, ceremony, music, and language, alive and passed forward.

The Pinangba Cultural Celebration Initiative, brought Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities together to celebrate identity and heritage. At Cherbourg, a NAIDOC celebration drew over 100 people, welcomed by the Mayor. At Thursday Island, the Winds of Zenadth Cultural Festival filled four days with colour and dance. In Cairns, residents walked a catwalk in traditional dress. And at Stagpole Street, participants gathered on National Sorry Day to lay handprints in a garden - a quiet, powerful act of acknowledgement.

One participant put it plainly: "Fantastic connection to community, really enjoyed listening to stories."

Every single person surveyed said they were satisfied. One said: "Very deadly day."
