Home should never feel lonely
Loneliness can make even the safest place feel distant. At BlueCare, we believe everyone deserves connection, comfort, and genuine human warmth — especially in the place they call home.
That’s why we created Compassionate Companions: trained volunteers who spend time with residents who may be feeling isolated. A shared cuppa, a gentle chat, a walk in the sunshine, a chance to be truly heard. These small, human moments bring light back into someone’s day.
And the impact? It’s real, immediate, and deeply felt.
For residents who may be far from family or facing mobility challenges, this program offers something truly meaningful: connection that feels like home.
“Just being there can be comforting.” — Wayne, Compassionate Companion
Wayne was one of the very first Compassionate Companions, but even he’ll tell you those first steps into an aged care home felt confronting. The faces were new, the environment unfamiliar, and many residents were frail or unwell.
But what Wayne discovered changed everything.
He learned that his presence alone made a difference.
“Sometimes it’s a heartfelt conversation; other times, quiet companionship. Even when there’s little conversation, just being there can be comforting.”
Stories like Wayne’s are only possible because of supporters like you.
With your help, we can reach more people
Compassionate Companions is now active in six BlueCare neighbourhoods and aged care homes across the state, but the need for this type of support is growing fast. In 2026, we’re aiming to expand into 12 locations across Queensland, reaching even more residents who would benefit from companionship.
To get there, we’re developing Volunteer Toolboxes: simple, practical kits that help us recruit, train, and support new volunteers in every community. With 30 volunteers already onboard, we’re working towards a team of 50 volunteer Compassionate Companions who can be there when someone needs a friendly face.
BlueCare puts you at the heart of it all
Since 1953, the Blue Nurses have been there for Queensland thanks to the compassion and generosity of our community. And while our name has changed, and much of the work we do these days is made possible through government funding and client contributions – people like you are still at the heart of it all.
It’s donors, volunteers, fundraisers and partners that helps us deliver the services, like our Compassionate Companions program, that are entirely funded through generous support.
