A caring visit can make a day

Thank you for helping us recruit and train more Social Support Volunteers like Judy.

When Judy’s beloved pooch passed away, she was lost. Then she decided to give something back to the community by volunteering. As a Social Support Volunteer, Judy was visiting Daryle and his wife, Marilyn. She spent time talking with Marilyn and helped walk their dog, Kenny. Now that Marilyn has moved into a Blue Care home, Judy stops by to check in on Daryle. They often share a cuppa and chat. Additionally, she gets to spend time with Kenny.

Volunteer Coordinator, Fiona says, “Social Support Volunteers are the perfect solution to loneliness. They visit elderly people in the community to help them with simple tasks… More importantly, they’re a friendly face. Someone for older people to chat to and connect with.”

The funds raised for this program contribute to training more people like Judy. Which means ensuring that all volunteers are highlyprepared to provide the best quality of person-centred care. The training for this role includes learning how to:

  • have difficult conversations, such as helping people deal with grief or transitioning into palliative care
  • recognise and support people with dementia
  • be aware of and show respect for different cultures

The CareApp has been another useful tool in combating loneliness. For some of those whose loved ones live far away or are unable to visit, this App has been remarkable. It allows residents to communicate with their loved ones through photos, videos and messages. Keeping these relationships connected is vital to the wellbeing of those under our care.

There is still a lot of work to be done in this space. But we are grateful for the generosity expressed so far. We look forward to keeping you updated about these programs in the future.
